Abstract

Bacteroides microfusus ( Kaneuchi and Mitsuoka ) differs significantly from the type species of Bacteroides, Bacteroides fragilis ( Castellani and Chalmers ) that it cannot be classified within the genus Bacteroides . Bacteroides microfusus possesses a mol % G+C compatible with Mitsuokella multiacidus but differs markedly from this taxa in morphology, biochemical and chemical characteristics. On the basis of these criteria it is suggested that Bacteroides microfusus be reclassified in a new genus, Rikenella , as Rikenella microfusus comb. nov.
