Abstract

AbstractPre‐calculated reciprocal Green's functions are accurate and efficient for forecasting tsunamis generated by either submarine mass failures or submarine earthquakes. In the present study, reciprocal Green's functions are extended to the forecast of storm surges. As the reciprocity between volume flows is not natural, new reciprocity relations are first established and verified. These reciprocal Green's functions, after a convolution with the atmospheric pressure and wind stress, can give the water surface and volume fluxes of the storm surge promptly. Thus, various storm surge scenarios can be considered, and a useful forecast can be devised. Detailed simulations on storm surge inundation can be obtained quickly in a way similar to tsunami inundation.
