Abstract
This paper deals with recent trends of research and development on steel products for environmental engineering applications. Special emphasis is placed on the contributions of new branches of steel science and technology to the solution of global environmental problems. Particularly valuable have been the contributions of high-performance electrical steels to energy conservation, of corrosion-resistant stainless steels to environmental protection of plants, equipment and machinery, of boiler tubes and pipes to the enhancement of power-plant efficiency under hyper-critical pressures, of high-tensile steels to the manufacture of lighter automobiles, and of highly reliable long-life rails to the realization of high-speed trains. Recycling of steel scrap is another important subject. Joint research and developments by business communities, governments and academic institutions will acquire greater importance as the need to develop such technologies increases, permitting wider use of new steels, more accurate evaluation of service life and easier recycling of used products.
