Abstract

ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) is the technology that has become very important to fill up the gap between the present urgent need for the wider bandwidth required for the ever increasing Internet applications and the time required for the installation of fiber optic telecommunication systems. In the meantime, many other new technologies have been developed related to the recent multimedia transmission systems. One such technology is ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and it has been playing an important role. This paper first reviews some important relevant technology developments, including that of optical fiber, and next looks at the performance of ADSL on ATM using existing commercially available ATM switches.
