Abstract

This review explores the role of educational television and research on educational television in the Soviet system of education. In the USSR, educational television has a place in education fundamentally different from that which it occupies in the United States. This has implications for the kinds of research which Soviet educators do on ETV; it also suggests some changed approaches to ETV which might prove valuable in this country. But to establish a basis for understanding the different emphasis in Russian ETV, it will help to consider briefly the nature of the Soviet educational system in general, and the Soviet approach to educational research in particular.
