Abstract
In 1989 it was shown that erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs)1 are useful for soliton amplification and transmission.2 It was also shown that a lumped amplifier technique which uses EDFAs made it possible to move the dream of soliton communication into the developmental stage.3
