Abstract
Recent advances in airborne remote sensors are precursors of advances in spaceborne sensors. We used a hyper-multispectral airborne sensor (VNIR and SWIR spectral regions) to simulate Japanese ERS-1 and to investigate the potential capability of J-ERS-1 [1]. Analysis of these data clearly shows that we can use hyper-multispectral data not only to discriminate but also to identify lithology. This idea was reflected in the design of J-ERS-1 and ASTER. ASTER, which will be launched on the EOS-AM1 platform in 1998, will provide 5 band TIR and 6 band SWIR data. A new airborne TIR scanner, which can simulate ASTER, is now being developed.
