Abstract

In recent years our understanding of the macromolecules in connective tissue has increased considerably. Much has been learned about the chemistry and manner of synthesis of these substances, but the determination of their normal functions and their involvement in disease states has been less successful. In this paper, I summarize recent studies on collagen. Certain controversial or little noted questions will be emphasized along with recent developments in methodology. Wound healing and the removal of collagen are discussed elsewhere in this conference.
