Abstract

Abstract The U. S. Navy has made extensive use in submarine tanks and in gasoline cargo tanks of tankers of a vinylidene chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer lining. It was found that the use of the material was justified in cases where a heavy duty coating resistant to fuels and salt water was necessary and short periods of moderately elevated temperatures were to be en-countered. In addition to reducing corrosion it was found that use of the coating simplified the cleaning of tanks. Results of the use of vinyl paints on U. S. Navy ships are reported, It was found that the vinyl system was sufficiently superior to the cold plastic paints in corrosion resistance to justify its use. It was found also that the vinyls gave a performance at least equal to the average obtained previously with hot plastic. The tough film of the vinyls did not check or embrittle.
