Abstract

Dinoflagellate cysts are abundant in estuarine and shallow marine sediments of eastern Australia. Some taxa, such as Protoperidinium spp., Operculodinium israelianum (Rossignol) Wall 1967, Lingulodinium sp. and Cobricosphaeridium sp. show changes in abundance with changing salinity but overall, the assemblage composition is relatively homogeneous. Other species, such as Polysphaeridium zoharyi (Rossignol) Bujak et al. 1980, Tuberculodinium vancampoae (Rossignol) Wall 1967 and Operculodinium centrocarpum (Deflandre and Cookson) Wall 1967 change in abundance with latitude. The net effect is to produce distinctly different assemblages in the north from the south.
