Abstract
The origin of petroleum, closely connected with the origin of life on earth (Sylvester-Bradley, 1964), is one of the main points of issue in the present study of natural history, having paramount significance for the solving of practical problems of petroleum geology. After the Sixth World Petroleum Congress in Frankfurt/Main (1963), many articles containing well-founded evidence on the non-biogenic origin of petroleum have been published. To summarize them, the present paper briefly outlines the main features of the theory of the inorganic origin of the hydrocarbons of the earth's crust.
