Abstract

Porous ceramics combine the advantages of both ceramics and porous materials. Due to their excellent combination of properties, such as lightweight, high surface area, excellent high-temperature properties, good sound and thermal insulation properties, excellent thermal shock resistance, etc., porous ceramics are attractive in a wide range of advanced structural and functional applications. As a result, the field of research on porous ceramics has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. Within the scope of this review, the current application domains of porous ceramics have been identified. The techniques currently used for processing porous ceramics have been critically analyzed and the influence of the processing parameters on the microstructure, properties, and various applications of porous ceramics has been thoroughly discussed. Finally, the current status of waste utilization for porous ceramics development has been critically reviewed and some future research directions for further development of porous ceramics have been proposed.
