Abstract

A new avenue for the synthesis of a variety of organic scaffolds was opened by the introduction of the magnetic Pd-NHC catalyst in heterogeneous catalysis. This review covers a very pertinent area of magnetically recoverable heterogeneous N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) based palladium catalyst in organic transformations such as Suzuki-Miyaura, Heck, Stille, Sonogashira, Hiyama, Buchwald-Hartwig coupling and asymmetric arylation, allylation, reduction, cyanation, carbonylation, and condensation reactions. The recent trends in magnetically recovered Pd-NHC catalyst are thoroughly investigated with special emphasis on the catalyst's synthesis, efficiency, and recyclability. This includes the areas of magnetic nanoparticles coated with carbon, mesoporous materials (SiO2, MCM-41, SBA-15), polymers, and ionic liquids supported Pd-NHC catalyst. It aids the readers in formulating protocols that would improve the reactivity, selectivity, and stability of metal complexes supported by magnetic nanoparticles as well as strategies to lessen metal leaching during reactions.
