Abstract

Antenna figures of merit are normally defined and understood for transmitting antennas. With the advent of powerful computational modeling tools, it has become possible to represent these antenna parameters directly in terms of power flow near receiving antennas. Using streamlines of the Poynting vector field, the incident power absorbed by losses in the antenna or captured by the antenna load can be represented as geometrical areas. These concepts generalize the notion of the effective area shape for the receiving antennas. Other antenna concepts can be understood using the Poynting streamline method for receiving antennas, including directivity radiation pattern, impedance mismatch, antenna loss, realized gain, polarization mismatch, aperture efficiency, and mutual coupling.
