Abstract
SummaryIn this article, I argue that Jean-Luc Marion’s concept of the saturated phenomenon offers a new way of thinking the relation between God and the human person. I show that the saturated phenomenon allows us to construct the relation between incommensurable terms (God and the human being) without requiring a similitude to mediate the relation. This essay will be published in two parts. In Part One of this essay (here below), I ground my argument in Thomas Aquinas’s doctrine of relation, and, through Pascal, link Marion’s understanding of “infinite distance” to Aquinas’s understanding of relation. As a consequence of this analysis, in Part Two I will develop a new concept of relation.
