Serials: The Journal for the Serials Community has been digitised and can be accessed in full on this website. All content is freely available on an open-access basis. Serials was published between 1988 and 2011. In 2012, the journal was retitled and is now published as Insights: the UKSG journal.

Introduction

“...the online world is not a lack of context; it is a different context. I have been an online postgraduate student at the University of Edinburgh since January 2008, studying for an MSc in E-learning[2]. The course is taught fully online, using a variety of digital tools and environments, including a virtual learning environment (VLE), discussion boards, blogs, Skype[3], Second Life[4], video games and, access to a myriad of digital resources from the University Library and the wider online world. When we talk about place we are meeting ‘on’ Skype for online chat, or ‘in’ the 3D virtual world, Second Life.
