Summary Information technology connecting billions of human minds has changed our lives but not always for the better. There are growing concerns that the electronically facilitated human swarming behaviour feeds trolling, conspiracy theories and antidemocratic tendencies. Insect states are well understood but hardly comparable. Can the studies of swarm intelligence in vertebrates help us to read our own hive mind? Michael Gross reports.
