Abstract

The reactivity of amorphous copper manganese oxides (Hopcalite) with respect to thermal treatments has been investigated. This system shows complex bulk and surface changes upon heating in vacuum, air, oxygen and carbon monoxide. The mixed valent oxide changes oxidation states in general accordance with the redox controlled charge exchange Cu(II)+Mn(III)⇌Cu(I)+Mn(IV). This is particularly so during the armorphous to crystalline phase transition and during reactions with oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been used to characterize the chemical and physical changes caused by the reactivity of this system.
