Abstract

This talk highlights the role of retinal microglia in different aspects of inflammasome activation during retinal degenerative and inflammatory diseases. We will first highlight the mechanisms how loss of retinal homeostasis evokes an unbalanced immune reaction involving responses of local microglia and recruited macrophages. We then summarize the scientific evidence for a critical role of microglia for inflammasome activity in the retina derived from cell culture studies and experimental animal research.
