Abstract
This article presents a recent review on reactive distillation (RD) covering the fundamental aspects of RD technology as well as plant design, modeling, industrial applications, and recent trends. RD is an important tool regarding process intensification due to the integrated operation of reaction and separation in one unit operation. Firstly, the basic principles of RD technology are highlighted and general design considerations and different design tools are addressed. Multiple modeling approaches as a prerequisite for RD process simulation and optimization are described. Applied industrial processes are presented and recent research trends within the field of RD as enzymatic RD, catalytic cyclic distillation, hybrid processes including RD or alternative energy forms in RD are pointed out.
