Abstract

Abstract Additional studies of reactions to antipneumococcal rabbit serum are presented which show: 1. 1. Shocking doses of antiserum can be reduced to an ineffectual level when sensitizing doses of polysaccharide and the interval between sensitizing and shocking doses are constant. The intensity of the reactions decreased (as antiserum doses were reduced) from uniformly severe to uniformly mild reactions before ineffectual doses were reached. 2. 2. Different lots of the same type and of different types of antipneumococcal rabbit serum vary widely in their effectiveness in producing reversed passive anaphylaxis. 3. 3. Reasons are given for the suggestion that the presence or absence of circulating polysaccharide should be determined before giving antipneumococcal rabbit serum.
