Abstract

Aqueous sulphate and bisulphate ions have been irradiated at 1849 A in the presence of methanol, ethanol, and propan-2-ol, the gaseous product being hydrogen in every case. The quantum yields for sulphate ion and bisulphate ion photolysis were determined in terms of the hydrogen gas evolved as a result of the absorption of 1849 A quanta by the respective ions. The use of acetone as an electron-scavenger has shown that the primary absorption process of sulphate ion involves charge-transfer. The effect of pH variation upon the photochemistry of the sulphate ion has been investigated.
