Abstract
The reactions of O (3P) with the aromatic hydrocarbons biphenyl, phenanthrene, 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene were studied in an isothermal low pressure discharge flow system with mass spectrometric detection. The measurements were performed in the temperature range 298 K<T<873 K, in an excess of O atoms over hydrocarbon. The obtained rate date can be described by the following Arrhenius expressions (k(T) in cm3 mol−1 s−1): biphenyl k(T)=(1.2±0.2)×1013exp(-1485±149)/T phenanthrene k(T)=(1.9±0.4)×1013exp(-921±92)/T 1-methylnaphthalene k(T)=(1.2±0.2)×1013exp(-647+65)/T 2-methylnaphthalene k(T)=(1.3±0.3)×1013exp(-606±61)/T Kinetic and mechanistic information derived from these measurements are discussed.
