Abstract

1. We have studied the reaction of butanethiol with tolan in the presence of iron pentacarbonyl under the effect of sodium ethylate. In the presence of the latter, one isomer (probably the trans-isomer) of 1,2-diphenyl-1-butylthioethylene is formed; the presence of Fe(CO)5 leads not only to adding-on of butanethiol to tolan, but also to formation of a saturated sulfide — 1,2-diphenyl-1-butylthioethane. 2. Iron pentacarbonyl inhibits homolytic addition of butanethiol to tolan. 3. Iron pentacarbonyl catalyzes hydrogenation of 1,2-diphenyl-1-butylthioethylene by butanethiol to form the corresponding saturated sulfide.
