Abstract

Rayleigh scattering of the 5145 Å line of an argon ion laser is reported for a d.c. argon plasma jet operating at 1 atm. The measured signal intensity is used to obtain the kinetic temperature distribution of the plasma gas and this distribution is compared with the spectroscopic LTE temperatures determined from the 4300 and 7272 Å argon I lines. The results show that over a wide range of power levels, LTE is not satisfied except for the very central region of the plasma. In all other parts of the jet, the upper states of the argon atoms in the plasma are overpopulated.
