Abstract

The effect of low temperature electron irradiation on the subsequent deformation of niobium single crystals was examined. The effect was found to be dependent on the tensile axis orientation; a softening effect was observed in the specimens deformed by the primary slip and a hardening effect in the specimens deformed by the anomalous slip. The controversial role of interstitial atoms in the low temperature deformation can be explained by the difference in the type of operative slip system.
