Abstract

The rates of carbon contamination by electron bombardment on surfaces of copper, iron and aluminum targets in flow gases such as hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, oxygen, air and methane have been obtained by measuring the C K-emission intensity on the targets in an electron microprobe. The rates of carbon contamination are considerably decreased by using the gas flow method. These results were compared with those obtained in a high vacuum evacuation system.
