Abstract We suggest that the recently discovered pulsing binary X-ray sources Her X-1 and Cen X-3, as well as binary X-ray companions in general, may be rapidly rotating degenerate dwarfs. The model accounts in a natural way for their presence in binary systems, observed luminosity, pulse period, and rate of spin up. No black holes are required even in possibly massive star systems such as Cyg X-l.
