Optically Thin Spherically Symmetric Model Buff, James ; McCray, Richard Abstract Spherically symmetric accretion flows in the presence of a strong X-ray source are discussed. Gas temperature is determined locally by a balance between X-ray heating and radiative cooling. The rate of mass accretion is regulated by the location of the sonic surface, which depends on X-ray luminosity and spectrum. No steady flow is possible unless the source has a soft X-ray cutoff with energy >2 keV. Radiation pressure on the gas due to photoionization may exceed that due to Compton scattering by a large factor.
