Abstract

AgCuSn alloys containing 30÷34wt%Cu and 10÷20wt%Sn, which correspond to pseudobinary eutectics were rapidly quenched using melt spinning method. The α Ag, α Cu fee solid solutions, β (Cu 17Sn 3 bcc orederd and δ (Cu 41Sn 11 precipitates were identified in thin ribbons. The amount of β phase in ribbons significantly increased with an increasing tin content. The solubility of all elements in the metastable solid solution was established. It was found that β phase contained predominantly copper and 28%Sn and 10%Ag. The following crystallographic relationship between α and β phases was found: (011)α ∥ (001)β and [001]β and [100]α ∥ [100]β. Mechanical alloying of Ag, Cu and Sn powders of the same composition as the ribbons was performed in a planetary ball mill. The amounts of α Ag and α Cu decreased and tin disappeared completely with increasing milling time; additionally Ag 3Sn 1 Cu 6Sn 5 and Cu 10Sn 3 phases were identified after prolonged milling time.
