Abstract

An HPLC method has been developed that can determine propranolol and its chief metabolite, 4-hydroxypropranolol, in plasma without the necessity for a pre-injection clean-up step. Sample clean-up is achieved by using a pre-column in conjunction with a column-switching device so that proteinaceous and other contaminants by-pass the analytical column. Accurate determinations were possible in the range 20–1000 ng ml–1. A method is also described for improving the minimum detection level by the on-column concentration of analytes.
