Abstract

Existing methods for the automated conversion of organic nitrogen to N 2 and for the preparation of N 2 for mass spectrometry have been modified to reduce the time and effort required for N 15 N 14 isotope ratio determination. Detailed procedures are given for the operation of the nitrogen analyzer and the vacuum system. The technique is in practive free of atmospheric contamination, permits the trapping of residual traces of hydrocarbons, and does not require venting of the vacuum system to the atmosphere.
