Abstract

Hexamethylenetetratellurafulvalene (HMTTeF) has been found to show large frequency shifts of the CC stretching vibrational Raman bands on ionization. Magnitudes of the shifts are comparable to those for TTF, HMTTF and HMTSF. Such large shifts indicate that an electron is removed from a τ-bonding orbital of HMTTeF on ionization but not from the lone pairs of tellurium. Degrees of charge transfer in HMTTF- and HMTSF-TCNQ have been estimated by use of the large frequency shifts and compared with those estimated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
