Abstract

The depolarization ratio of Raman scattering from gas-evaporated small silicon particles 60 to 350 Å in average particle size is reported for the first time. The low values of ϱ, e.g. about 0.25 for particles 350 Å in size, are not explained by the bulk concepts are inoperative to the silicon particles. A comparative study of the silicon particles and films shows that the polarization properties of the films are not interpreted by the continuous random network model but favor the microcrystalline model instead.
