Abstract

Assignments of Hg- X ( X = Cl, Br, I or SCN) stretching modes are made from Raman and far i.r. spectra of 1,2-bis-diphenylphosphinoethane (DPE) complexes of mercury halides. Evidence is presented that indicates the presence of both terminal and bridging bromines and chlorines in the (Hg X 2) 2·DPE complexes while the respective Hg X 2·DPE complexes appear to be totally bridged structures and the spectra of HgI 2·DPE and Hg(SCN) 2·DPE complexes show only terminal Hg- X stretching modes. Note is made of low frequency (550−380 cm −1) Raman band patterns which appear to be characteristic of the structure of the complexes.
