Abstract

ABSTRACT Grounded in critical pedagogies, this study invites Palestinian-Israeli students to reflect on the limited representation of their indigenous language in the Israeli linguistic landscape (LL). Using the participatory-documentary tool “PhotoVoice,” they capture photos of signage in their area, analyze following a set of guiding questions, and share their findings. Content analysis of students’ “PhotoVoices” and follow-up reflections sheds light on their perceptions of the linguistic reality in the area and their emerging awareness and critique. The contribution of the study lies in demonstrating the pedagogical potential of the innovative tool PhotoVoice in engaging local inhabitants in exploration endeavors into linguistic landscapes and developing their awareness to representation of minority languages in the public space.
