Abstract

This paper presents the results from an archaeological excavation at the Neolithic site of Rašinovac, near Ždrapanj in the Piramatovci Valley (in the hinterland of the town of Skradin in Northern Dalmatia). This previously unknown site was test excavated in 2013 when a 2x2-metre trench was opened to determine the site’s stratigraphy and chronology. Excavations suggested that Rašinovac was a single-layer open-air settlement and subsequent analyses of the material culture (mostly pottery and chert) confirmed that it was an Impressed Ware site. Two radiocarbon dates also reveal that Rašinovac is among the earliest known Early Neolithic sites in the region (first century of the 6th millennium BC).

Highlights

  • The Piramatovci Valley has been included in the Neolithic literature since the 1970s because of excavations at the Impressed Ware site of Vrbica (Fig. 1)

  • We cautiously suggest that these finds once belonged to the site of Rašinovac, which is located 300 m south-east of St

  • But prior to the start of the settlement’s occupation, there is another sterile layer of compact sandy-clayish, light brown-reddish soil (SJ 4)

Summary

INTRODUCTION

The Piramatovci Valley has been included in the Neolithic literature since the 1970s because of excavations at the Impressed Ware site of Vrbica (Fig. 1). Recently, at the opposite end of the Piramatovci Valley, another Impressed Ware open-air settlement was discovered and test excavated – Rašinovac, which is located approximately 600 m northwest of the village of Ždrapanj and 100 m south-west of the hamlet of Macure. Annual flooding was likely the main reason for the specific locations of the only two excavated Neolithic (both Impressed Ware) villages in the Piramatovci Valley: Vrbica and Rašinovac. Both sites are near water springs, on the closest slightly elevated positions that remain dry during the seasonal flooding.
