Abstract
Severe short pitch railhead corrugation with a wavelength of approximately 70 mm has been observed on the inner rail of small radius curves on a general freight route in South Africa. Complex eigenvalue analysis of a reduced six mode modal model showed how coupling of the second coupled mode of traction motor pitching and wheelset torsion with the first asymmetric wheelset bending mode becomes unstable at the corrugation frequency in the presence of large lateral creepage. This occurs for a certain range of gear mesh stiffness when traction is transmitted across the wheelset traction motor gear pair.
