Abstract

The adsorption of 14C-labelled amino compounds (butylamine, ethylenediamine, methionine and ethanolamine) on a smooth gold electrode was studied by a radiotracer method at low concentrations of the labelled species ( c<10 −4 mol dm −3) in acid (1 mol dm −3 H 2SO 4) and alkaline (0.1 mol dm −3 NaOH) media. In acid medium no adsorption of the simple amino compounds was observed; however, a significant adsorption was found in the case of methionine owing to the presence of the SCH 3 group. A potential- and concentration-dependent adsorption was found in alkaline medium for all the species studied. Two types of adsorption were distinguished. During of the first stage of the adsorption loosely adsorbed species are formed mainly, but with increasing adsorption times and concentrations the role of a strongly chemisorbed species becomes much more pronounced. It is suggested that the formation of strongly chemisorbed species is connected with oxidative transformations and the apparent potential dependence of the adsorption may be explained in terms of oxidative chemisorption and reductive desorption processes.
