Abstract
Books have been written about how to get into medical school [1]. Many articles have been written about how programs should select residents in a variety of specialties [2–5]. There are even several monographs for medical students and postgraduates about how to get into the residency of one’s choice [6,7]. However, these latter books deal predominantly with what different medical fields are all about, what to look for in a program, and how to organize one’s approach to applying to a residency. Outside of the expected superior paper credentials, there is very little written about what exactly residency selection committees are looking for in a candidate when they set up their respective interview and match lists, particularly in the more competitive fields.
