Abstract

In 2011, fewer than 5% of all radiologists gave to the Radiology Advocacy Alliance Political Action Committee, the political lobbying arm of the ACR. Although the ACR and its political action committee, and those who have contributed their time and energies to them, deserve tremendous credit and have enjoyed many successes, thisdoesnot change the fact that both our specialty and physicians as a whole have been remarkably uninvolved in thepoliticalprocess relative to many other groups. For example, the American Association for Justice, a political action committee for trial lawyers, spent 6 times as much on direct lobbying efforts. Whatare thepsychologicalobstacles holdingusback fromanactivity socritical to our livelihood and the future viability of our specialty? I believe there are 5 main psychological barriers we must acknowledge and hopefully overcome.
