Abstract

The fission yields of nine nuclides (eight belonging to the heavy mass region) for the fast fission of 232Th by pile neutrons have been determined using radiochemical techniques. In preliminary experiments the fission yields of six nuclides for the fission of 235U by thermal neutrons have also been measured. Comparison of the data obtained with data reported in the literature for the heavy mass region has permitted definition of the absolute fission yields of certain nuclides (7·64 ± 0·5% for Ba 140, 7·05 ± 0·4% for 141Ce and 7·52 ± 0·5% for 144Ce) with a percission sufficient for the utilization of these nuclides in the measurement of the fission rate of 232Th for fast neutron spectroscopy.
