Abstract

A daughter product of 226Ra, 210Po, emits 5.3 MeV a particles. The kinetics of uptake, retention, and cytotoxicity of 210Po-citrate have been studied in Chinese hamster V79 cells. The survival of V79 cells is exponentially dependent on the absorbed dose to the cell nucleus, the mean lethal dose (D37) being 700 mGy. These results, when compared with those obtained for Auger electron emitters incorporated into the DNA of V79 cells, confirm that Auger cascades are as effective as high LET a particles in causing biological damage.
