Abstract

Much has been published on the issue of Pius XII’s «silence» on the murder of European Jewry and its perpetrators. Critics claim that Pius XII never explicitly condemned the murder of the Jews nor named the perpetrators, whereas Pius XII’s supporters maintain that his words, though measured, were nevertheless clearly understood as a condemnation of Nazi ideology and antisemitism. Notwithstanding the interpretations which may be given to the Pope’s pronouncements, or the merits of his diplomatic activities, a defence of the papacy can however be advanced on the basis of an examination of some of Vatican Radio’s programs during 1940-1942. They show that Vatican Radio broadcasts not only consistently opposed any form of collaboration with Nazi ideology but also stood for the sanctity of human life regardless of descent by informing its listeners about the persecution and murder of the Jews.
