Abstract An unsuccessful search for the 1 65a and 1 66a radio recombination lines provides upper limits of 6 x 10- cm6 pc for the emission measures of H+, He+, C+, H2+, and H3+ in four dark nebulae having photographic absorptions from 1 to 5 mag. These results limit the net ionization rate of hydrogen to be less than 0.7 x 10-15 in these dark clouds.
