Abstract

A lower hybrid pump wave with frequency close to the lower hybrid frequency (ω1/2cω1/2ci) is a potential candidate for the suppression of lower hybrid drift instability in a theta pinch. The coupling is a four-wave parametric process involving lower hybrid sidebands. It introduces an effective damping on the drift mode causing suppression of the latter at modest pump powers. The longer wavelength modes are more strongly affected than the shorter ones.
