Abstract
The Radio Research Board was set up under the D.S.I.R. in 1920 to study aspects of radio work which were not being adequately studied in existing establishments. Under it a Radio Research Station was established to investigate the phenomena of radio wave propagation, to try to understand the fundamental physics underlying them, and to give advice to those users of radio who had propagation problems to solve. At the start a full understanding of the ionosphere was the principal requirement.
