Abstract

Abstract This article considers the intersection between theories of radical activism and the use of applied theatre for social justice outcomes, using EmersonTHEATRE as an exemplar. EmersonTHEATRE is a project in its fifth year of creating devised theatre with urban high school students and young adults – primarily of colour – around the issues that inform their lives. The student-driven transition from its early goals (leadership and critical thinking skills development and awareness of social inequity) to a radical posture (focused on audience education and the demand for change) is considered through the lens of activist theorists, including Marx, Gramsci, Alinsky, Freire, Apple, Chomsky, Giroux, Gillen and Sanders. The following question is asked: If applied theatre as a form can be employed for radical activism, how can we best use this powerful tool for change to ‘bend the arc of the universe towards justice’?
