Abstract
Results of investigations since 1959 on time dependence in nucleo- cytoplasmic interrelations during embryonic development are reviewed. Topics discussed are: radiation inactivation of nuclei as a method to determine nuclear activity periods in early animal development; nuclear function in different species; the role of the nuclei in metabolic differentiation; the role of the nuclei in changes of cytochrome c oxidase activity; and the role of nuclei in the increase of catepsin activity.
