Abstract
Kesternich et al. and Jung et al. have recently raised serious questions as to whether past investigations of permanent radiation induced electrical degradation (RIED) of ceramics were actually monitoring bulk effects, as claimed. Their evidence to the contrary appears compelling. The present investigation provides evidence that bulk damage does exist and is in the form of dislocations. Discussions are focussed on some aspects of the controversy between evidence for RIED, as reported in the past, and evidence for radiation enhanced surface contaminations.
